Kid's Self Defense - Celebrating Confidence

Janette Lapus

Janette is a native Houstonian. She grew up in Southwest Houston and graduated from Houston Baptist University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she worked as a bedside nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Janette’s interest in patient and family-centered care was a natural fit, leading her to become involved in bereavement care. Janette returned to Houston and took a break from nursing in order to start a family. She has two beautiful children, Lucy and Joshua. When her kids entered school, Janette began her journey back into fitness through kickboxing and jiu-jitsu, eventually discovering yoga. Inspired by her fitness instructors, she completed the Yoga Teacher Training at Awakened Yoga Studio in Spring 2017. Janette’s interests outside of yoga and jiu-jitsu are creating vegetable-based smoothies, learning other forms of martial arts (Eskrima and Jeet Kune Do), promoting women’s self defense, and painting with acrylics.

Welcome to Awakened Yoga's Kid’s Self Defense Class- Celebrating Confidence!
Your child will gain confidence by becoming more aware of their surroundings as well as learning basic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense moves! We will also incorporate some light yoga exercises to help warm-up and cool down our yogi/ninjas. Come and join the fun as we Celebrate Confidence for our kids!

The late Carlos Gracie Sr. learned the art of Jiu-Jitsu from Mitsuya Maeda and opened the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in 1925. It was in this Academy that Helio Gracie adapted the Japanese techniques into the modern Jiu-Jitsu that we know today. Helio Gracie developed a defensive form of fighting designed for a weaker person to defend themselves against a bigger and stronger person. It is very important to learn how to defend yourself on your feet as well as on the ground. Anyone can safely learn Jiu-Jitsu and enjoy the benefits of practicing this wonderful martial art! The benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu are increased strength, flexibility, endurance as well as improved overall well-being.
Janette Lapus is a purple belt under Royce Gracie/Chad Kight at Sugarland Mixed Martial Arts and a Yoga instructor at Awakened Yoga Studio.
